Thomas Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the game plans and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.

The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about using it appropriately. Individual quality is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when stardom prevails. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the previous squad. He watched the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel discuss loving the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has reacted in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has demonstrated that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German stated. “Bellingham just has the edge. It takes a certain edge to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone need to support him and establish a setting where he can [have] this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are building as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s final group games versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. Foden has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win against Borussia Dortmund this week.

The question, though, is how to use the various creators at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, restricting Harry Kane’s game as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle another player as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for a long time. I think it fits his style the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also so used to playing for his club in a particular setup, with a defined role. Believe he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?

The manager mentioned one star making runs for tap-ins and the other netting strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is additionally a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter setting up Kane to net in an international match against the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.

“This is where eventually it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him onside but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
