Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.

The economist commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate following their development".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released communications demonstrated that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood the economist's choice to resign.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," OpenAI remarked.

Political Context

This development arrives after the two houses of the US legislature voted on this week to endorse a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its files on Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has indicated he expects to sign the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following pushback from his supporters.

A batch of financier-linked emails disclosed by the legislative panel last week included several high-profile figures in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.

The communications indicated that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often trying to introduce the academic to prominent world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the emails were released with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to restore faith and fix bonds with the people most important to me".

Career Background

The economist served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He led the institution from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When stating his step-down from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning research organization in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was no longer associated with the institution.

Summers entered the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
